Banner ads that flash

I hate them. I loathe them. They give me a headache. They are the visual equivalent of a punch in the face. What are these people thinking? And what about ads that overflow the space provided for them, blocking content? I hate them, too!

Presumably, the purpose of banner ads that flash and blink and annoy the eyes in other ways is to attract the viewer's attention. Well, they certainly attract my attention. They also attract my mouse, which I right-click on the offending image and, using what is becoming one of my favourite Mozilla features, I select "Block Images from this Server". Presto! I need never see another ad from those people on any page I visit.

Of course, if I ever decide to unblock images from one of these servers (hah!), I just have to go to Tools/Image Manager/Manage Image Permissions. I haven't been at this very long, yet, but I will list the servers that I have blocked so far.

Servers blocked because of annoying ads:

  • a248.e.akamai.net
  • ad.ca.doubleclick.net
  • bannerfarm.ace.advertising.com
  • cdn2.tribalfusion.com
  • cnd2.adsdk.com
  • cserver.mii.instacontent.net
  • m3.doubleclick.net
  • spd.atdmt.com
  • www.canada.com
If you're the administrator of one of these sites and you have decided to stop being a source of these annoyingly flashing or over-sized ads, visit my Contact Page and drop me a line.

If you'd like to download a free, first-rate, open-source browser that gives you the ability to refuse images from servers whose content has pissed you off, visit Mozilla.org (for Windows, Linux or MacOS X).
